Got Suction Line Problems? This Type of Evacuation System Cleaner Could Help

Every hygienist knows the importance of a good evacuation system cleaner. Without regular maintenance, the dental evacuation system run into problems that can slow the entire practice down.

Plus, the possibility of backflow means a system without proper cleaning can put patients at risk of cross-contamination. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control recommends that dentists and dental hygienists disinfect evacuation system suction lines on the daily.

The typical maintenance routine includes flushing suction lines and traps with an evacuation system cleaner to wash away debris. This measure is designed to dislodge any build-up of organic debris and remove it from the system. However, the inside circumference of the suction lines will inevitably accumulate a layer of debris called biofilm that will eventually cause a decrease in suction volume and put stress on the evacuation system.

When that happens, costly repairs and replacements are likely to follow – not to mention the money lost from disrupting the flow of work in the practice. There’s nothing worse than having equipment fail on you during a busy day of procedures.

One solution to this conundrum is to use an evacuation cleaner that contains enzymes in addition to your regular cleaning solution. These products are designed to eat away at the accumulated biofilm rather than flushing it out. While they aren’t as immediately effective in dislodging debris from the suction line, if you leave the enzymes time to do their work, they will gradually soak the whole evacuation system and clear out the organic waste.

One such product, Bio-pure, is said to provide ‘continuous cleaning’ long after it has been applied. Some dentists report not having to clean the hand trap every day after adopting the product into their routine.

Bio-pure is not the only enzyme cleaner on the market. As always, you should check with the manufacturer of your evacuation system to ensure any products you intend to use are compatible. When possible, it is usually most convenient to ensure wide cross-compatibility between your various tools and products. If you use Sable’s dental hand piece, using another Sable-endorsed product cleaning product like Bio-pure minimizes the risk of compatibility issues. Sable’s dental hand piece parts are also compatible with some other handpiece brands.
