AC Parma was impressed by his skills and paid for him €10.000.000 in 2002. The Romanian international had a spectacular 2002/03 season for the Serie A side after joining the club from relegated Verona. He forged a prolific partnership with Brazilian international Adriano with Mutu getting 18 goals. Alongside Brazilian Adriano, he became part of the most prolific strike partnership in Parma's Serie A history as they finished fifth. Chelsea ex coach Claudio Ranieri said: 'Mutu is a very good striker. He can play in every position, is quick and strong, and anyone who scores 18 goals in one season in Serie A is very dangerous. His debut for Chelsea was fantastic. He scored 3 times in his first 4 games including the game against one of Chelsea's traditional "enemy" Tottenham Hotspur and all season was very good for him. After this season the new Chealsea's coach became Jose Mourinho and this was the start of Mutu's end at Chelsea.
